What is a camera obscura?
The Latin words camera obscura can be translated to mean a darkened room or chamber, and a camera obscura is an optical device that projects an inverted image of the scene outside the room onto the opposite surface within the room. They have often been used as a drawing device, especially during the Victorian period, and also for entertainment purposes. The workings of the camera obscura has helped prove that light travels in straight lines and is one of the inventions that led to photography and the camera.
The Larner Road camera obscura is available to view by appointment between 1.00 pm - 6.00 pm on Mondays - Fridays up until the end of August.
